The Depths…

…is a solo deckbuilder roguelike set beneath the crumbling surface of Kald, where ancient horrors sleep and the walls themselves seem to breathe. As a lone Delver, you descend into a shifting dungeon of forgotten rooms, each hiding curses, strange events, and twisted creatures that grow stronger with every step downward. Armed only with a deck of fading resources and a single action each turn, you must press into the unknown. But deeper dangers lurk: every fifth chamber is ruled by a boss whose abilities tick toward ruin, tracked by cursed relics too old to name. There is no turning back. Only descent. Only The Depths.

The Depths is currently at a standstill. The base mechanics of the cards, playing cards, combat encounters, bosses, progress, resource management, and others are all pretty far along and quite fun. Our issue, however, is the potatoes to the meat, the combat mechanic. It turns out, rolling dice then doing a bunch of math, while it can be fun, is a major slowdown to the game. We want it to be faster paced, to elicit fear as you delve further and further into insanity. If you have to stop and see how much damage you and the enemy do each round, number crunching, that pace is shot. We want to keep everything else as is, possibly even still using dice to perform combat. We’ve yet to figure this particular snag out and it is holding back further play testing and development of the game.
